A night of REGGAE, ROCKSTEADY and SKA with Mimi Maura at La Respuesta
by kx0101 on Feb.20, 2010, under Photography
Charisma, took the form of a woman last night at La Respuesta as singer songwriter Mimi Maura took the stage along with an all-star line up of musicians ranging from the likes of Sergio Rotman sax player for Los Fabulosos Cadillacs to Boris Bilbraut drummer from Puerto Rican reggae band Cultura Profetica. The audience enjoyed 2 fiery sets of REGGAE, ROCKSTEADY and SKA that kept them dancing throughout the night. Covering classics such as Bob Marley’s “Concrete Jungle” as well as showcasing Maura’s impressive work with her original songs from her “very hard to find albums” as she said humorously joking with the audience.
Special guests during the show included rock singer Fofe who performed a spell binding duet with Maura and Kianí Medina known for her work as back up singer for Cultura Profética. Also the brass section was completed with the participation of Johnny Boy Trombone player for Ska band La Fundación. Furthermore and to top the celebrations of the night the band surprised Maura with a very puerto rican version of the Happy Birthday song that fused the band and the audience together to congratulate Maura on her special day.
The show ended with two encores and very special a cappella rendition of an old cult classic “El Apartamento” dating from her years as lead singer from local band Alarma back in the early 90’s.
Mimi Maura currently resides between Puerto Rico and Argentina and has been awarded throughout her career recognitions such as PREMIO GARDEL 2002 for Best Solo Rock Performer. She has also toured Europe extensively being a veteran of such important festivals like the Actual Logroño Festival in Spain.

Medalla Light Yelloween ft. Los Amigos Invisibles

It was a dark night made of mystery, sexiness and fun, a night where the production of the Medalla Yelloween transformed the Hiram Bithorn Stadium into the biggest club venue in the Metropolitan area of San Juan packing hundreds of costumed people with one purpose only, to party! Few events have the luxury to mix different styles of music while at the same time being successful in attendance; however this one was one of those occasions it created a forum for genres as diverse as reggaeton, rock and house/club music leaving space for a very diverse musical ecosystem.
The music started with a rock punch courtesy of Puerto Rico’s own La Secta All Star, a veteran band that quickly let themselves be heard thought the rumble of the night with catchy tunes, sticky riffs and the occasional power ballad. Next in line was Yomo urban reggaeton singer with lots of attitude. He took the stage dressed as Beetlejuice rinsing up to the occasion and the night festivities. This seemed to echo with the crowd as he pulled a very energetic show with dancers fireworks and of course make up. He ended his set loosing himself amidst the sea of color and costumes of the audience.
At the turn of midnight, Los Amigos Invisibles took the stage making themselves be heard and felt with a mix of sexy groves and funky attitude. Princesses, thieves, clowns and zombies all dancing at the same time carried the groove forward without skipping a beat. The masses were entranced and with the show they gave. It was a particular song “En 4″ that took the girls in the pit to a sexy frenzy everybody singing with their hands in the air emulating the band while doing the four sign.
The night hit its peak with Carl Cox a notorious DJ from Europe whose club beats have helped him create a reputation of being house/electro ‘s finest turntableists. During the set a fire show in charge of sexy dancers complimented his presentation as he stood in the darkness mixing magic while casting a spell on the crowd with his massive grooves.

SuperAquello interpreta La Tarde album release

Van Valentine departed from a traditional rock band sound into a more organic and toned down performance for this show giving it space for the lyrics to bloom and showcase his singer song writing skills. A short but powerful set left the crowd wanting more and gave the a tease of whats next to come from this emerging artist.
Right around 30 past midnight the crowd started gathering again in front of the stage, people left the bar and close the gaps between band and audience to me one of the surprising factors of the night was witnessing first hand SuperAquello’s huge following and really hardcore fans. You can say that most of their songs were sing a longs since there was major interaction as they worked the crowd a 100% on Songs like “El Ornitorrinco” and “Entre las Patas”.
A big surprise for SuperAquello fans was that they got treated to an intimate screening of the documentary LA EMERGENCIA filmed by Gisela Rosario who spend almost 4 years following the band to dig deep and show a personal window into the creative process behind the band and showcase their personalities on and off the stage.
On the tech side when i was happy with the shots i got for the night. I went for broke and started experimenting with multiple exposures in a live show inspired by Zack Arias’s blog the results can be unreal.

the day started around 9 am I went to Aguada to find some screws for my soft box. Turns out that i was missing one screw when i tried to assemble it yesterday. Anyway I went to Tornilleria Matos and they hook me up with the right screw. After that we got together with the guys from La Frekuencia. Our plan was to shoot at the Arecibo Observatory unfortunately it wasn’t open to the public so we had to improvise. As we drove around Arecibo looking for spots to shoot we got to an old building I always wanted to shoot in so I mustered the courage to ask the guys that were working on the site if we can shoot there. Surprisingly they said yes and the rest is history i got to shoot without worries for about 2 hours. Im really happy with the outcome hope you guys like it

One of my favorite up and coming bands currently working on their debut album. Keep an eye on these guys their music is great, a very cool mash up between electronica and guitar driven rock with great hooks that stick like gum against pavement at noon.
