A little change of beat here as two titans and legends from our rock scene Miguel “Tito” Rodriguez (Sol d’ Menta) and Jose David Perez (Circo, Amplitude) join forces for an all out jazz jam at the Mayagüez Jazz Fest 2010. The session also featured Peter Torres in rhythm guitar and in alto sax Ricardo Bartolomei. Highlights of the session included jazzed versions of pop classics like The Eagles “Hotel California” and Cindy Lauper’s “Time after time” along with oldies like “Besame mucho” that prove to be instant crowd favorites.

Changing the tempo here just came back from San Juan after covering The Killers concert at Coliseo de Pueto Rico for Spinearth.tv (more on that soon). But before getting to my hometown Aguadilla, Jose David Perez told me that he had a gig that night something different , something lounger, and more relax. So i said “Cool… I’ll be there.” It was the birthday celebration of David’s girlfriend Jeh and the tiny ensemble composed of Amed Irizarry, Antonio Caraballo,Ariel Robles and José David himself fired up the small club on Piñero Ave. The music was self explanatory cool grooves, hot jazz licks all put together in a very modern fashion. Recently I had the opportunity to work with a very talented drummer and percussionist Jose David Perez who is currently working on his new project Amplitude a very interesting fusion between jazz and pop. They are currently playing in the Metropolitan area of San Juan mainly in selected clubs.

The day started around 10am with a powerful breakfast courtesy of “Cano” (one of the coolest guy’s Ive ever met) we had a ham and cheese sandwich covered with cheese outside, Tasty! Then Immediately after that we drove to Guavate to shoot our first location. To my surprise it was a gorgeous bamboo field easily taken out from the pages of a fantasy book. It was unreal specially the smell of the place which was really fresh and inviting. We did aprox. 2 hours of shooting trying to make the most out of the area.When we were done we have a much deserved lunch in one of the classical “lechoneras” of the area. When we were done and were coming out the place. We saw famous puerto rican basketball star Jose “Piculin” Ortiz having a beer chilling with a friend.

After driving through the madness of metropolitan traffic me arrived at Cano’s place our second location which prove to be the hardest to set up but where the most striking and gallant images came through. It wall all about patience and it was tested shot after shot try and error, fail and re-fail, until i hit a sweet spot with the mere 2 flashes i had. it was a very hard exercise of light control and the use of snoots and gobos to not contaminate the scene and the cool colors from the vertical neon lights that were part of the set. I’m a technical guy but more than numbers, f stops, power at x amount I’m about the image i use Kentucky windage and estimate a lot perhaps because of my inexperience vs other photographers with more gear and studio equipment.
