A night of REGGAE, ROCKSTEADY and SKA with Mimi Maura at La Respuesta
by kx0101 on Feb.20, 2010, under Photography
Charisma, took the form of a woman last night at La Respuesta as singer songwriter Mimi Maura took the stage along with an all-star line up of musicians ranging from the likes of Sergio Rotman sax player for Los Fabulosos Cadillacs to Boris Bilbraut drummer from Puerto Rican reggae band Cultura Profetica. The audience enjoyed 2 fiery sets of REGGAE, ROCKSTEADY and SKA that kept them dancing throughout the night. Covering classics such as Bob Marley’s “Concrete Jungle” as well as showcasing Maura’s impressive work with her original songs from her “very hard to find albums” as she said humorously joking with the audience.
Special guests during the show included rock singer Fofe who performed a spell binding duet with Maura and Kianí Medina known for her work as back up singer for Cultura Profética. Also the brass section was completed with the participation of Johnny Boy Trombone player for Ska band La Fundación. Furthermore and to top the celebrations of the night the band surprised Maura with a very puerto rican version of the Happy Birthday song that fused the band and the audience together to congratulate Maura on her special day.
The show ended with two encores and very special a cappella rendition of an old cult classic “El Apartamento” dating from her years as lead singer from local band Alarma back in the early 90’s.
Mimi Maura currently resides between Puerto Rico and Argentina and has been awarded throughout her career recognitions such as PREMIO GARDEL 2002 for Best Solo Rock Performer. She has also toured Europe extensively being a veteran of such important festivals like the Actual Logroño Festival in Spain.

Great experience working with such an interesting and enigmatic group. Photoshoot took place in old san juan at Casa Herencia a beautiful mansion in the Old City, became the lifework of a family of entrepreneurs in the 1890’s. This family found a special space for all the antiques they acquired from their travels. Mirrors from Venice, Persian carpets from Morocco, chandeliers from eastern Europe and style their place with great glamour and a timeless touch. This space spoke magic and I guess the pictures reflect this character as well as the band who were absorbed by it.

Changing the tempo here just came back from San Juan after covering The Killers concert at Coliseo de Pueto Rico for Spinearth.tv (more on that soon). But before getting to my hometown Aguadilla, Jose David Perez told me that he had a gig that night something different , something lounger, and more relax. So i said “Cool… I’ll be there.” It was the birthday celebration of David’s girlfriend Jeh and the tiny ensemble composed of Amed Irizarry, Antonio Caraballo,Ariel Robles and José David himself fired up the small club on Piñero Ave. The music was self explanatory cool grooves, hot jazz licks all put together in a very modern fashion. Enjoy

It was a dark night made of mystery, sexiness and fun, a night where the production of the Medalla Yelloween transformed the Hiram Bithorn Stadium into the biggest club venue in the Metropolitan area of San Juan packing hundreds of costumed people with one purpose only, to party!

Wow! how time flies. It was just last year when I shot these guys for the first time. cool info for the gear heads i got a new camera!!. Got myself a canon 5dmark2 and I’m the process of selling my old equipment (d90)because of the upgrade.
What a great excuse to go out there and shoot than to test some new equipment in the field. Just a couple of heads up for those interested in this new cam. What i found really hard in this camera is to focus because it doesn’t have a AF assist beam on camera you have to buy the proprietary flash or as i did find someone close or with the band to point a flashlight to where you want to focus. Nevertheless once you got it is all bliss and beauty.

It was about 2pm and everybody was feeling the excitement as the Snickers Urbania elimination round started. The riders coming from various parts of the island teared up the old Coliseo of Rincon which was transformed into an awesome skatepark course . The adrenaline, the sweat and the intensity of the riders fueled constantly the whole arena. One of the most interesting things i saw at the event was that there was for the most part a sense of companionship between riders from different styles BMX, Inline, Skaters even freestyle walkers…lol just kidding. Anyway to me it was my first experience covering and photographing a complete contest like that. I can fairly say that i had fun. Congrats to the winners and those who qualified. See ya in November!
